POSITION SUMMARY:
The CG Pipeline TD is a key technical role responsible for the direction, development, and maintenance of software tools and the overall CG pipeline in a fast-paced feature film visual effects production environment. This role provides critical front-line support and troubleshooting to artists, ensuring their efficiency. The Senior Pipeline TD works closely with show CG Supervisors for day-to-day priorities, with a primary focus on Houdini-centric workflows and broader CG departmental integration, including R&D into Unreal Engine, USD, and cloud rendering.
MAIN DUTIES:
The CG Pipeline TD will primarily direct, develop, and maintain software tools and the CG pipeline, with a focus on Houdini and its integration. They will develop the CG workflow across departments, emphasizing long-term best practices and scaling capacity, as well as lead the development, testing, and support of virtual workstations and cloud rendering workflows in Linux environment. They will drive and develop USD (Universal Scene Description) and Solaris adoption within the pipeline, develop pipeline and asset management tools to meet immediate production demands, ensuring facility-wide consistency, and provide front-line production support across various disciplines, troubleshooting pipeline tools within assets and shots. They will identify day-to-day priorities in conjunction with show supervisors and act autonomously on complex pipeline tools requiring a broad understanding of the larger pipeline. The ideal candidate will have extensive Python experience in VFX production environments, specifically focusing on 3D department tools and publishing workflow development. They must have a strong understanding of Nuke, Maya, and Houdini, including shot/asset artist workflows, publishing, and their respective Python APIs, as well as prior working experience with asset management system development, distributed rendering, and UI design. - Collaborate with VFX Supervisors, CG Supervisor, other pipeline TDs, engineers, and department heads on tool development.
- Lead and mentor junior pipeline TDs.
- Test and validate tools and techniques in production, working closely with the pipeline team on software releases.
- Act as a resource for show production staff for complex, urgent technical problems.
- Work on projects improving the efficiency of asset setup, caching, and shot-data handoff across the entire pipeline.
- Guide Pipeline Engineers and R&D with debugging technical issues.
- Develop comprehensive knowledge of software and systems, contributing to evolving production standards and conventions.
- Update documentation for the pipeline and tools to reflect changes.
- May be required to perform work as CG artist on the box.
- CG Generalist Skills: Proficiency in modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, and rendering. Ability to work across multiple CG disciplines and software packages.
- Strong understanding of the entire 3D production pipeline from a generalist perspective.
- CG FX skills: requiring a strong understanding of FX simulation techniques (liquid, particle, rigid-body, cloth, hair, fire, smoke, water, clouds, explosions), an eye for detail, timing, and scale, and the ability to collaborate.
WHAT YOU BRING:
The ideal candidate will have extensive Python experience in VFX production environments, specifically focusing on 3D department tools and publishing workflow development. They must have a strong understanding of Nuke, Maya, and Houdini, including shot/asset artist workflows, publishing, and their respective Python APIs, as well as prior working experience with asset management system development, distributed rendering, and UI design. Additional desired skills include:
- Familiarity with Flow aka ShotGrid, including interactive use and API knowledge (Flow Toolkit/SGTK experience is a plus).
- Experience with Windows and Linux development environments.
- Ability to communicate cross-discipline and provide innovative solutions to pipeline issues.
- Basic understanding of source control software (e.g., GIT).
- Experience with production database systems.
- (If FX Artist work is required): Working knowledge of Nuke, RV, and Flow. Experience in high-end CG is preferred.
