POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Pipeline TD is a key technical role responsible for the direction, development, and maintenance of software tools and the overall CG pipeline in a fast-paced feature film visual effects production environment. This role provides critical front-line support and troubleshooting to artists, ensuring their efficiency. The Senior Pipeline TD works closely with show supervisors for day-to-day priorities, with a primary focus on Maya and Houdini workflows along with broader CG departmental integration, including R&D into Unreal Engine, USD, and cloud rendering.

MAIN DUTIES:
The Senior Pipeline TD will develop and maintain tools for the CG pipeline, with a focus on Maya and its integration. They will develop CG workflows across departments, emphasizing long-term best practices and scaling capacity, and collaborate with the pipeline team to drive and develop USD and Solaris adoption within the studio. They will develop pipeline and asset management tools to meet immediate production demands, ensuring facility-wide consistency, and provide front-line production support across various disciplines, troubleshooting pipeline tools within assets and shots. They will also be responsible for the following:
  • Identify day-to-day priorities in conjunction with show supervisors and act autonomously on complex pipeline tools requiring a broad understanding of the larger pipeline.
  • Collaborate with VFX Supervisors, CG Supervisor, other pipeline TDs, engineers, and department heads on tool development.
  • Lead and mentor junior pipeline TDs.
  • Test and validate tools and techniques in production, working closely with the pipeline team on software releases.
  • Act as a resource for show production staff for complex, urgent technical problems.
  • Guide Pipeline Engineers and R&D with debugging technical issues.
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of software and systems, contributing to evolving production standards and conventions.
  • Update documentation for the pipeline and tools to reflect changes.
  • CG Generalist Skills: Proficiency in modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, and rendering. Ability to work across multiple CG disciplines and software packages.
  • Strong understanding of the entire 3D production pipeline from a generalist perspective.

WHAT YOU BRING:
The ideal candidate will have extensive Python experience in VFX production environments, specifically focusing on 3D department tools and publishing workflow development. They must have a strong understanding of Nuke, Maya, and Houdini, including shot/asset artist workflows, publishing, and their respective Python APIs, and be experienced with asset management system development, distributed rendering, and UI design using PySide. Additional desired skills include:
  • Familiarity with ShotGrid, including interactive use and API knowledge (SGTK experience is a plus).
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with the pipeline team on large scale projects.
  • Ability to communicate cross-discipline and provide innovative solutions to pipeline issues.
  • Experience with Windows and Linux development environments.
  • Basic understanding of source control software (e.g., GIT).
  • Working knowledge of RV and Shotgrid. Experience in high-end CG is preferred.
